Not content with taking all the RAM and GPU the industry can make for the next year to 18 months, Sam Altman now wants RAM from your home computer as well.
But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time. You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people’s intuition is the opposite of that.
Of course he frames it as home users being selfish. He evens calls everyone who has RAM at home “terrible”. Of course he doesn’t mention that he really wants all the RAM so he can rent back usage to consumers. Of course he doesn’t mention that he wants to know about everything you do with his AI products and please don’t think about running your own local AI – that’s crazy – which it may be today.
This is all about benefiting you as you build skynet. I’ll give you my RAM when you donate your wealth for the greater good. From a global allocation perspective it’s quite terrible to have so much wealth concentrated amongst so few individuals often being used about 5% of the time.
Fuck off Sam.
